Copenhagen Local Takes Tourist Cycling Safety into His Own Hands
Every summer, thousands of tourists get on a bicycle to experience Copenhagen like the locals. However, many do so without first receiving information about Danish traffic laws, hand signals or the particular rhythm of the city's busy cycle lanes.
Copenhagen-based entrepreneur and programmer Oliver Wang Hansen has experienced this first-hand. He cycles through Copenhagen every day, all year round, and has increasingly found that encounters with unprepared cycling tourists create unsafe and sometimes dangerous situations - for both the tourists themselves and other road users.
After speaking with several tourists, one thing quickly became clear: Most had received no introduction, training or information before renting a bicycle and entering Copenhagen's busy traffic. Oliver therefore decided to take matters into his own hands and created BikeSafeCPH.com - a free platform designed to better prepare tourists for exploring Copenhagen by bicycle.
Rules, Routes and Great Experiences
On BikeSafeCPH.com, tourists can learn about Danish traffic laws, hand signals and the unwritten rules of Copenhagen's cycle lanes. The platform presents the most important information in a simple and accessible format, enabling visitors to prepare quickly before getting on a bicycle.
The website also features videos, recommended cycling routes through Copenhagen and guides to places where tourists can rent or repair a bicycle. In addition, the platform directs users to selected bicycle-friendly attractions, experiences and places to eat across the city.
The ambition is not to have fewer tourists cycling in Copenhagen - quite the opposite. The goal is to create better-prepared cycling tourists who feel confident and contribute to a safer experience for everyone using the city's cycle lanes.
Support from Key Organisations
Oliver has already been in dialogue with both Wonderful Copenhagen and the Danish Road Safety Council. Both organisations have responded positively to the initiative and approved their inclusion on BikeSafeCPH.com with “Recommended by” status.
This is an important step for the project, but Oliver hopes that even more organisations and businesses within the tourism industry will get involved. Hotels, bicycle rental companies, tourism organisations and experience providers all have an opportunity to help share this information with tourists before they enter Copenhagen's traffic.
A Cycling Licence for Tourists
Within the coming week, the platform will be expanded with the Copenhagen Tourist Cycle License (CTCL). Tourists will be able to complete a short theory course followed by a test assessing their knowledge of the most important rules and situations they may encounter on Copenhagen's cycle lanes.
This is not an official or government-recognised licence. Instead, it is a voluntary educational tool designed to make essential cycling safety information more engaging and accessible.
Oliver is particularly keen to begin a dialogue with the city's bicycle rental companies about how tourists can be encouraged to complete the theory test and obtain their Copenhagen Tourist Cycle License. This could, for example, become part of the rental experience or provide tourists with specific benefits from participating businesses.
From Digital Learning to Practical Training
In the longer term, the vision extends beyond the digital platform. Oliver imagines physical cycling test areas inspired by the Children's Traffic Playground in Fælledparken, Østerbro - but designed specifically for adult tourists. Here, visitors could quickly learn how to navigate the cycle lanes, use hand signals, position themselves correctly and respond to common situations in Copenhagen's cycling traffic before heading out into the city.
Oliver has taken the first step, but the project's full potential depends on others getting involved. He therefore hopes to connect with businesses and organisations from the tourism and cycling industries that share his ambition to make Copenhagen an even safer and better cycling city - for residents and visitors alike.

Københavner tager cykelturisternes sikkerhed i egen hånd
Hver sommer sætter tusindvis af turister sig op på en cykel for at opleve København som de lokale. Men mange gør det uden først at have fået information om de danske færdselsregler, håndsignaler eller den særlige rytme, der præger byens travle cykelstier.
Det oplevede den københavnske iværksætter og programmør Oliver Wang Hansen på tæt hold. Han cykler gennem København hver dag året rundt, og med tiden oplevede han, at mødet med uforberedte cykelturister skabte flere usikre og til tider farlige situationer både for dem og andre.
Efter at have talt med en række turister stod én ting hurtigt klart: De fleste havde ikke modtaget nogen form for introduktion, træning eller information, inden de lejede en cykel og bevægede sig ud i den københavnske trafik. Derfor tog Oliver sagen i egen hånd og skabte BikeSafeCPH.com - en gratis platform, der skal gøre turister bedre forberedt på at opleve København på cykel.
Regler, ruter og gode oplevelser
På BikeSafeCPH.com kan turister lære om de danske færdselsregler, håndsignaler og uskrevne normer på cykelstierne. Platformen samler den vigtigste viden i et enkelt og letforståeligt format, så besøgende hurtigt kan blive klædt på, før de hopper op på cyklen.
Websitet indeholder også videoer, anbefalede cykelruter gennem København samt oversigter over steder, hvor turister kan leje en cykel eller få den repareret. Derudover guider platformen brugerne til udvalgte, cykelvenlige oplevelser og spisesteder rundt omkring i byen.
Ambitionen er ikke, at færre turister skal cykle i København. Tværtimod. Målet er at skabe bedre forberedte cykelturister, som føler sig trygge og samtidig bidrager til en mere sikker oplevelse for alle på cykelstierne.
Opbakning fra centrale organisationer
Oliver har allerede været i dialog med både Wonderful Copenhagen og Rådet for Sikker Trafik. Begge organisationer har taget positivt imod initiativet og godkendt, at BikeSafeCPH.com kan vise dem med en “Recommended by”-status.
Det er et vigtigt skridt for projektet, men Oliver håber, at endnu flere aktører fra turismebranchen vil være med. Hoteller, cykeludlejere, turistorganisationer og oplevelsesaktører har alle mulighed for at hjælpe med at give informationen videre til turisterne, inden de bevæger sig ud i trafikken.
Et cykelkørekort til turister
I løbet af den kommende uge bliver platformen udvidet med Copenhagen Tourist Cycle License (CTCL). Her kan turister gennemgå en kort teoridel og afslutte med en prøve, der tester deres kendskab til de vigtigste regler og situationer på de københavnske cykelstier.
Der er ikke tale om et officielt eller statsligt anerkendt kørekort, men om et frivilligt læringsredskab, der skal gøre sikker viden mere motiverende og tilgængelig.
Oliver håber især at komme i dialog med byens cykeludlejere om, hvordan det kan gøres attraktivt for turister at tage teoriprøven og få deres Copenhagen Tourist Cycle License. Det kunne eksempelvis ske som en del af udlejningsoplevelsen eller gennem konkrete fordele hos deltagende virksomheder.
Fra digital læring til praktisk træning
På længere sigt rækker visionen ud over den digitale platform. Oliver forestiller sig fysiske testbaner inspireret af Trafiklegepladsen i Fælledparken på Østerbro - men udviklet specifikt til voksne turister. Her vil besøgende på kort tid kunne lære at orientere sig, give tegn, placere sig korrekt og reagere på typiske situationer i den københavnske cykeltrafik, inden de begiver sig ud i byen.
Oliver har taget det første skridt, men projektets fulde potentiale afhænger af, at flere vil være med. Derfor håber han nu at komme i kontakt med virksomheder og organisationer fra turisme- og cykelbranchen, der deler ambitionen om at gøre København til en endnu tryggere og bedre cykelby - også for byens gæster.

The logo, ready to use
The BikeSafe CPH mark is a bicycle wheel set in a soft-cornered tile - the Wheel Tile - paired with the wordmark in Schibsted Grotesk. Every file below is free to use when writing about or linking to BikeSafe CPH.
How to use it
- Prefer the SVG. The PNGs have a transparent background and are large enough for print.
- Keep clear space around the logo of at least half the height of the tile.
- Minimum size for the mark is 16px - below about 20px the spokes start to close up.
- Do not stretch, rotate, recolour, redraw or add effects to the logo.
- Please do not use the logo in a way that suggests BikeSafe CPH endorses a product or service.
